Teenage Anxiety

Stress and anxiety are something that I specialise in as a therapist, & I use a combination of Reflexology & / or Aromatherapy to help people with this.

Lately I have been making lots of blends for teenagers who are struggling.

A combination of School & exam pressure, not least the uncertainty of the will we / will we not debate over sitting exams, struggles with relationships / friendships & a sense of self worth seem to be common issues right now.

Lack of concentration, trouble sleeping, showing less interest in things they usually enjoy, mood swings, self harm & drug / alcohol use, have been mentioned to me by concerned parents.

I have been blending a combination of oils for these teens to use, either in a rollerball, for use in pulse points, an Inhalator, & / or a blend for a diffuser in the family home - because it is important not to forget that teens who are struggling can affect the mood and dynamic of the entire household.

I don't use the same blend - I vary, depending on what the teenager is experiencing. The blends are all as individual as the children.

Some need a mood boosting oil, such as orange or grapefruit, some need a calming oil, such as lavender or Chamomile, and although Clary sage is, in my opinion, one of the best oils for anxiety & low mood, I never use it if drug or alcohol abuse is indicated.

It is important if your child is struggling to listen, not to show judgement, just let them know you are there when they are ready to talk.

Cook healthy nutritious meals, even if they don't have much appetite, as there is a link between gut health and mental health.

Try to encourage them to exercise, to boost serotonin levels and reduce the need for "fight / flight" & encourage some time for them to switch off from their technology to allow themselves to fully relax.

Individual cautions and dilution rates apply, as always.

Any parents with immediate concerns to their child's safety should contact their GP.  The website mind.org.uk has useful information, links and advice.

Let's talk anxiety!

It doesn't always look like people think it should!

People can, and do, mask their anxiety. Outwardly they can appear to be the most confident person in the room, whilst inwardly they are battling a whole host of emotions.

We talk about stress, we talk about depression, but very rarely is the 3rd wheel addressed!
The good news is, there are things you can do!

Many are now familiar with deep breathing techniques, meditation & Adult colouring books. People may be less familiar with Apps that you can download, and also that there are many videos that are freely available on You tube relating to anxiety - Including hypnosis and relaxing music.

Reflexology is great for reducing stress levels & helping the body and mind re-balance, plus there are some amazing essential oils that can be used during anxiety attacks to help calm you, and also oils that can be used to help keep you feeling more on a level.

Anxiety is a very individual thing - But it shouldn't be something you suffer in silence.

During the winter our body's need more support to stay well & fight off colds & flu.

As well as the loss of Vitamin D readily available, We tend to spend more time indoors, with lack of good quality fresh air.

Additionally, we are running ourselves ragged, trying to work, look after the kids and prep for Christmas.

It all adds extra stress to the body!

Lot's of people don't make time for themselves during this part of the year, leading to serious burn out.

Aromatherapy, Massage & Reflexology all play their part in supporting a healthy immune system.

However, if you can't make time for your regular treatment right now, make sure you spend some time outdoors, top up on Vitamin C & D, and at least take 5 minutes out of every day to just be! - Close your eyes, breathe deeply, and let go of any stress you may be holding on to.

Aromatherapy

What can I say about Aromatherapy? - Too much for a short blog post that's for sure!

I use Essential oils daily - In my bath, shower, skin care & diffusers.
There are so many beautiful oils out there - & also some pretty vile ones too! (Citronella anyone?).

Aromatherapy is a very personal choice. It is not just about the scent, but the many values the oils have to the body systems, from Stress relief, to insect repellent From easing Insomnia to helping reduce symptoms of cold & flu.

Many people request an Aromatherapy massage, but really they are looking for a deep tissue massage with nice smelling oils - That can be accommodated, and the oils will always be chosen personally, on the day of treatment, depending on what is going on with the client.

A true Aromatherapy massage however, is the most relaxing, blissful treat! In most massages, oils assist the hands of the therapist to manipulate muscle tissue.

With Aromatherapy massage, the hands assist the oils to work their magic! It's a very hypnotic process.

Effleurage

Effleurage! - It's one of my favourite words! - "A form of massage involving circular, stroking movements made with the palm of the hand."

Effleurage is the movement we use at the start and end of each massage and even in between!

It's gentle, relaxing & soothing. We use Effleurage when we apply the oil to th3 body and it helps us warm up skin and muscle tissue prior to incorporating deeper movements.

What's your favourite part about a massage?

Reflexology - My favourite treatment!

Reflexology is one of my favourite treatments to give. It is a natural, holistic therapy that encourages the body to re-balance.

Using pressure applied to reflex points on the feet, it is suitable for most people, including children and the elderly.

I love seeing the transformation in my client's from when the enter, to when they leave.

It's so very relaxing & a huge stress reliever. When stress levels are reduced, the body functions more optimally.

Reflexology also improves circulation, encouraging blood flow to vital organs, lowering blood pressure and improves lymphatic function. - Even more so when using the Lymphatic Drainage technique.

Back to Business!

So, after taking 18 months off, due to the Pandemic, I am finally going back to work!  This is really exciting for me, and doubly so as when I start back in September, I will have my very own treatment room!

This has been my dream since I started, back in 2011, and I am trying not to overthink it!

The Pandemic has brought so much anxiety to everyone, but that is where I step in!  All of my treatments are focused primarily on relaxation!  Be it the mind or the body, when we are relaxed we can be the best version of ourselves.  Our body's function much better when we are less stressed.  Both Physically and emotionally.

People often think stress is primarily an emotional state - But it plays so much havoc with our other body functions, lowering our immune systems, and this is often taken for granted.

Physical signs of stress can include IBS, migraine, excessive sweating, aching muscles & joints, insomnia, chest pains, high blood pressure and decreased resistance to illnesses such as colds and flu.

Over the coming weeks, I shall be posting more information about the variety of treatments that I offer, and the benefits involved, including some self care tips where appropriate.

If there are any particular treatments that you would like more information on, or would like to see featured, then do let me know.

Please do take the time to like, comment and share my posts - It will be hugely appreciated as I build my business back up to where it was, and grow it further.

Much love to you all! x
